Mercedes this fall is introducing the industry's first fully electronic key system to replace the conventional mechanical ignition key in its CLK, which will sell for about $40,000.

The Pinout of the diagnostic connector Mercedes OBD 16 pin: contact — K-line ECU (ECU) (EZS) ignition (KLA) C, (PTS) Parking sensors, (SRS, AB) restraint system — seat belt pre-tensioners, air bags, starter control for (W168) and so on.

Insert the key, which resembles a miniature flat shoehorn, in what looks like the ignition, give it a quick twist and the electrical system will read the encoded key to start the car.

'Deep Blue could read 200 million chess moves in a second, but our system has an infinite number of codes, so many that it would take Deep Blue 600 years to crack it and start the car--and by then we probably will have come up with a new system,' claimed Mercedes spokesman Jim Koscs.

For years, the industry has been experimenting with tamper-proof, theft-proof ignition concepts, such as requiring a motorist to punch a series of numbers onto a key pad or slip a plastic credit card-like device into a slot to engage the engine.

But these notions never got beyond the testing stage. Now, with Mercedes taking the lead in making electronic ignition available to consumers, other car companies are expected to offer similar systems, starting with luxury vehicles.

'You'll insert the electric key into what looks like an ignition slot, give it a quick twist and release while the computer reads the coded password,' Koscs said.

The infrared signal from the electric key first unlocks the steering system and then starts the car. When the key is removed at the end of your trip, it automatically changes its password code.

The key is housed in a battery-operated fob that has buttons to lock or unlock the doors. If the fob battery goes dead, you don't have to call for help.

'A small conventional key is hidden inside the remote that can be used to unlock the door,' Koscs said. 'The electric key still works to start the car even if the fob battery is dead.'

The conventional key can also be used to lock the glove box and trunk and can be taken with you when the car is left with a valet.
