Recomendations for an add-on that does serial number tracking
We sell only half a dozen items, of which one has a 16 digit serial number , does anyone have any recommendations as an add on that would allow tracking of serial numbers allowing us to see when the item was bought and by whom, along with a note about that specific device (repairs etc)

Others may have suggestions for an add-on but could you use our inventory items for the basic recording of these items? You can select each item at the time of sale on your invoice and report on how many purchased or sold.

I don't believe you've quite hit what caroline is asking for. Our business revolves around lot numbers (food production), and we need a solution to track which lots are sold to which customers. Caroline seems to have a business in which each item is a 'lot,' a unique piece, and she wants to record that unique ID with the transaction as well as have the ability to make some notes about the device.
I'd suggest using the Reference field or perhaps just the notes (if they are free-text searchable) to associate the serial number with the transaction. Might it then be possible to use a CRM add-on to track any issues with repairs, etc. that the customer might have?

Serial number tracking is the process of tracking the journey an inventory item takes as it progresses through your facilities, from supply chain to warehouse storage to customer delivery. When you scan a barcode with a barcode reader connected to inventory software, information about that product and its serial number is sent to your inventory. Go to Inventory then select Adjust Quantity/Value on Hand. Select the Adjustment Type drop-down, then select Serial Number. Select the Adjustment Date. In the Item field, enter the item name, or select the small arrow icon and select it from the item list. In the Serial number column, select Quick view for Serial Numbers. We have thousands of products that move in and out. Each has a serial number. We also have individual customers (ie a university) and they will purchase thousands of the same product. They often come to us with a serial number of an item and not an invoice number because of the way items move around within their facility. So I need to be able to search these and I need serial number to be able to be added to invoices after they are paid. Right now I use the reference field (not good when you have more than a few purchased say over 5) and no good to add after payment has been added. Is this a possible add on?

I'm late to this discussion, but have a good suggestion that's just materialized. I've noted on the Fishbowl website that they have just announced integration with Xero. I've installed Fishbowl in a food/beverage producer that requires serial, lot and several other tracking categories that Fishbowl handles well. It also has workorder and BOM that can be used for processing/costing to finished product.

Yes Fishbowl will handle serial numbers on the purchase and the sale/shipping side, as well as lot numbers if needed.
